SMS Marketing for Finance Brands: Compliance-First Texting That Converts
Finance SMS done right: documented consent, A2P registration, quiet hours, and the messages borrowers actually want. The compliance-first playbook.
Borrowers read texts within minutes and emails within hours, which makes SMS the fastest channel a lender can run. It is also the channel where consent records matter most, because finance is the category regulators watch hardest. Done right, texting shortens follow-up from days to minutes and borrowers thank you for it. Done wrong, it generates complaints that follow your brand around. We have marketed lenders and finance brands since the Countrywide and LendingTree era. Here is the compliance-first playbook.
Why finance texting is held to a higher standard
Every US marketing text runs under TCPA, but finance gets the least benefit of the doubt:
- Consent records are the first thing anyone asks for. Express written consent, documented per contact, with a record of what the person agreed to and when. “They filled out a form once” is not a consent program.
- Transactional and marketing texts are different animals. A loan status update to an applicant is expected. A rate promotion needs its own explicit opt-in. Blurring the two is the classic violation.
- Carrier registration is not optional either. A2P 10DLC brand and campaign registration applies to finance like everyone else, and lenders with generic campaign descriptions get filtered like everyone else.
The pattern is consistent: the discipline that keeps you compliant is the same discipline that keeps your messages landing.
The consent foundation
- Express written consent, collected with clear language about message type and frequency, never pre-ticked.
- Consent stored per contact, synced and tracked, so “who agreed to what” is a lookup, not an archaeology project.
- Instant opt-out processing. STOP handled automatically on every campaign, logged, honored. In finance, a slow opt-out is a case file.
- Quiet hours enforced in the contact’s timezone. Texts that wake people up create complaints, and complaints create scrutiny.
- Documented opt-ins on every list you inherit. If the list came from years of forms and acquisitions, audit it before the first campaign.
The messages borrowers actually want
- Application and status updates. “Documents received”, “appraisal scheduled”, “clear to close”. Transactional texts tied to a real application are the highest-value texts in lending, and applicants expect them.
- Inquiry follow-up, in minutes instead of days. An inquiry texted in five minutes gets answered; the same inquiry emailed tomorrow competes with forty other emails. Inquiry flows are where lenders lose or win the loan.
- Rate-change alerts to an opted-in list. Rates moved, here is what it means for your scenario, one tap to an adviser conversation. Fast, relevant, and exactly why people opt in.
- Appointment and document reminders. Fewer missed meetings, fewer stalled files.
- Keyword autoresponders. Text a keyword, get the rate sheet or the calculator link. Two-way threads answered by your team, with every message logged.
What finance texts should never do
- Market to transactional consent. Status-update consent is not promo consent.
- Promise outcomes. “Guaranteed approval” in a text is the same liability as on a billboard, with a timestamp attached.
- Text scraped or purchased lists. In this category that is not a deliverability risk, it is the end of the program.
- Rush the cadence. Borrowers need five useful texts a year, not five a week.
Fairness check
If your email follow-up is not running yet, build that first: email carries the education load in a months-long sales cycle, and SMS works best as the speed layer on top. We covered the email side in our finance email guide. And if your product conversations require licensed advice, keep the texts logistical and let the licensed humans have the advice conversation.
