SMS Marketing for CBD and Wellness Brands: The Carrier Rules, Then the Campaigns
CBD texts can land, if the registration and content pass carrier screens. The compliance path for wellness SMS plus the five campaigns worth sending.
SMS is the channel wellness customers actually read, and for CBD brands it is one of the few growth channels with no ad-approval queue. It is also a channel where the category name itself raises carrier scrutiny. The brands that text successfully are not the ones with tricks. They are the ones that registered properly, collect real consent, and keep content clean. We market 8+ CBD, hemp, THC and wellness brands, and here is how SMS works when it is done right.
What carriers actually screen for
US carriers run automated content screens on campaign registrations and on traffic. CBD sits in a sensitive bucket, which means:
- Your A2P registration needs to be accurate. Brand legal name, EIN, and a campaign description that honestly describes what you sell. Mismatches between your registered description and your traffic are a common filtering cause.
- THC marketing is a different world from hemp. Carriers, platforms and processors all treat intoxicating products more harshly than hemp-derived wellness. If your catalog is THC-heavy, expect SMS to be a smaller, carefully-run channel, not a firehose.
- Content screens read your messages. Cannabinoid words plus urgency words plus short URLs is a pattern that scores badly. Educational, brand-forward phrasing scores better.
Nothing here is a loophole. It is the difference between a channel that compounds and one that dies mid-quarter.
The consent foundation
The requirements do not bend for wellness brands:
- Express written consent, collected by checkout checkbox or signup form, never pre-ticked.
- Consent stored per customer, synced from your store. If someone never opted in, no campaign ever reaches them.
- STOP and HELP handled automatically on every campaign, opt-outs logged instantly.
- Quiet hours enforced in the customer’s timezone.
This is boring, and it is exactly why it works: compliance is a machine, not a mood.
The five campaigns worth sending
- Abandoned checkout recovery, inside 48 hours. The intent window closes fast. Two short reminders, then stop.
- Replenishment at the right interval. Wellness products run out on a cycle: tinctures around day 27 to 33, supplements on their own rhythm. The reorder text timed to the customer’s actual usage converts better than any discount blast.
- Restock alerts. Sold-out SKUs, back in stock, subscribers hear first.
- Review requests, 5 to 7 days after delivery. The product has been used, the experience is fresh, and wellness buyers genuinely want to share results. (Careful with what they are allowed to claim: keep the ask about experience, not outcomes.)
- Winback at day 85 to 100. One message for customers gone quiet, with something real to come back for.
What CBD texts should never say
- Disease or treatment claims: “cures”, “treats”, “relieves anxiety”. FDA and FTC rules apply to a 160-character text exactly as they apply to a product page.
- “Medical” framing unless you are a licensed medical channel, which you are not.
- Discount stacking with urgency stacking. In a screened category, desperation reads as spam to both carriers and customers.
The winning voice is the dispensary-counter voice: helpful, specific, calm.
Fairness check
If your list is small and your email program is not running yet, do email first. Email carries more education per message and wellness buyers are researchers. SMS earns its keep on speed and open rates: reorder reminders, restocks, checkout recovery. We compared the two channels for recovery in email versus SMS for abandoned carts.
