Link Building for CBD Brands: Who Says Yes, and How to Get Placed

CBD link building is harder: publishers refuse the category. How hemp brands earn real placements: citations, vetted vendors, and claims-safe outreach.

Banner about link building for CBD brands: which sites place restricted categories and how to get listed.

Links are the hardest currency in CBD SEO. The pages that could link to a normal ecommerce store often refuse hemp outright, and the sites that do accept CBD charge for the trouble. But links matter more here, not less: with ads mostly off the table for the category, search is the growth engine, and search runs on authority. We run link building for 8+ CBD, hemp, THC and wellness brands. Here is what actually works.

  • Refusals are the default. Mainstream publishers, universities and many niche blogs block the category by policy. Cold outreach that works for fashion brands returns nothing for hemp.
  • The accepting market is priced accordingly. Placements that accept CBD sit in a smaller, costlier market. Budgeting for CBD links with normal-ecommerce assumptions leads to abandoned campaigns.
  • Outreach copy is compliance copy. The claims in your pitch email fall under the same FDA and FTC discipline as your product pages. An over-promising outreach email is a liability with a link attached.

None of this means links are impossible. It means the pipeline is different.

The three placement types that work for CBD

  • Citations and profiles. The foundation layer: business directories, industry listings, brand profiles. Consistent name-address-profile data plus early authority, manageable at scale, and most citation sources accept the category. This is where every CBD brand starts.
  • Vetted paid placements. A vetted marketplace beats cold outreach in this category, because the vendors in it have already said yes to CBD. The one we run holds 28+ vetted link sources with TrustPilot and domain-authority data visible on every vendor, tracked from selection through to the live placement. Vetting matters double here: a “CBD-friendly” network full of junk domains is a penalty risk, not a link.
  • Earned niche links. The slowest and best tier: hemp industry publications, wellness blogs that cover the category, local coverage, supplier and partner pages. Earned links come from having something to reference: original data, genuinely useful guides, a founder with a story.

The outreach discipline

  • Lead with the content, not the category. A data study or a genuinely useful guide gets read. “We are a CBD brand” as the first line gets deleted.
  • Keep claims out of the pitch. “May support wellness” discipline applies to every sentence an editor reads. One disease claim in an outreach email can burn a domain relationship.
  • Match relevance first. A mediocre wellness-blog link beats a strong gambling-site link. Topical relevance is what search actually rewards, and irrelevant links in a restricted category draw scrutiny.
  • Track every placement. Selection, order, live URL, anchor text. If nobody can produce the list, you do not own a link program, you own invoices.

Anchor and velocity basics

Natural anchor profiles mix brand, URL and descriptive anchors; exact-match anchors in a sensitive category look purchased because they usually are. Velocity stays steady: a flat monthly rhythm of placements reads organic, a spike of forty links in a week reads like a campaign. And every placement should point at a page that deserves to rank: a product page scored high, a guide that answers a real question, never a thin page.

Fairness check

If your product and category pages have not been rewritten around real searches yet, links are premature: authority pointed at weak pages is money spent twice. We covered that in our CBD SEO product pages guide. And never buy link packages from spam email: in a scrutinized category, a penalty is harder to climb out of than in normal ecommerce.
