How to Set Up SMS Marketing for Your Store
The complete SMS setup for Shopify stores, in 8 verified steps: phone line, inbound texting, order events, A2P carrier registration, autoresponders, test, first campaign.
SMS setup for your store takes 8 steps, in this order. The steps split into two lanes:
- Carrier lane (steps 1, 2, 5): happens in the Telnyx portal on our side. We do the work; this article shows the exact sequence so you always know where things stand.
- Dashboard lane (steps 3, 4, 6, 7, 8): happens in your Trinacle dashboard. Each is a couple of minutes of clicking.
Before starting: SMS access comes with your Trinacle plan. On some plans it activates when you run affiliate or influencer programs, or on request. How plan tools open up.
Step 1. Buy the phone line (carrier lane)
- Open the Telnyx number search: portal.telnyx.com/#/phone-numbers/search
- Search for a US number and confirm SMS is enabled on it
- Buy it, and save the number in full international format: +1 followed by the area code and number, like +12125551234
One line runs all your SMS: order texts, campaigns and two-way replies.
Step 2. Assign the line to your store (carrier lane)
- Open app.trinacle.com/admin
- Click Clients, then click your store
- Find the Telnyx Caller ID field and paste the number from Step 1, with the +1
- Click Save changes
From this moment, that number is your store’s business line.
Step 3. Turn on inbound SMS (your dashboard)
- Open app.trinacle.com/sms
- Open the Numbers & Setup tab
- Click Set up inbound SMS
- Wait for the status to say profile: connected
One click. This turns on incoming texts, automatic STOP handling, and keyword replies.
Step 4. Connect your store’s order events (your dashboard)
- Stay on the Numbers & Setup tab at app.trinacle.com/sms
- Click Enable order events (webhooks)
Now your store talks to the SMS engine in realtime: Order confirmed and Shipped with tracking texts send themselves the moment Shopify fires the events.
Step 5. Register for A2P: the carrier rulebook (carrier lane)
US carriers will not deliver marketing texts from unregistered businesses. Registration happens in the Telnyx portal, in two parts: the brand, then the campaign.
Part A: register the brand
- Go to portal.telnyx.com/#/messaging/a2p
- Create the brand: your store’s legal entity name exactly as it appears on IRS records, your EIN, and your business address
- Brand vetting usually completes in minutes to a few hours
Part B: create the campaign
- Under the approved brand, create a campaign
- Choose the use case: Mixed (covers both marketing and transactional texts)
- Write real sample messages when the form asks: the carriers review them
- Attach the phone number from Step 1 to the campaign
Part C: approval
- Carrier review usually takes 1 to 3 business days
- After approval, your store’s A2P status is set to approved in the Trinacle admin
Important: order and shipping texts work right away, before approval. Only marketing campaigns wait on it. The full A2P explainer.
Step 6. Create your autoresponders (your dashboard)
- Open the Autoresponders tab at app.trinacle.com/sms
- Create Order confirmed
- Create Shipped + tracking
- Optional: add a keyword responder, for example text JOIN to join the list
Step 7. Send a test (your dashboard)
- Go to app.trinacle.com/create-sms
- Set one recipient: your own phone
- Write something short. Send now
- Confirm it arrives. Reply STOP to confirm opt-out works, then START to undo
Step 8. Your first campaign (after A2P approves)
- Go to app.trinacle.com/create-sms
- Pick the audience, write the message, schedule or send
- Watch replies in the Inbox tab at app.trinacle.com/sms
What is automatic
- STOP, HELP and START keywords are handled automatically: no configuration, no monitoring
- Quiet hours pause texting automatically in your store’s timezone
- Every message in and out is logged
- Missed calls roll to voicemail with transcription, in the Voicemail tab
You never touch compliance mechanics: consent is tracked per customer and the carriers see a fully registered sender.
The first three sends worth queueing
Once the campaign gate opens, send these in order:
- The VIP drop alert: new arrival or restock, to buyers of that category first. Short, with the tracked link: this is the send that proves the channel
- The abandoned-checkout sweep: turn on the 48-hour recovery text so the flow catches carts while campaigns wait for the next drop: the timing data
- The reorder reminder for your most-consumable product, timed to its cycle: quiet, service-shaped, the highest-margin text you will send
Campaigns after those three follow the calendar: one or two a month with a real reason beats weekly blasts, and the report tells you when the list wants more.
Setup mistakes that cost weeks
- Waiting on the line purchase: everything else queues behind having a number, so Step 1 happens day one
- Trading-name mismatch in brand registration: the brand must match IRS records, not the storefront name. Mismatches bounce and cost a resubmission cycle
- Skipping the STOP test: confirm opt-out on your own phone before any campaign goes out. Two texts, thirty seconds, and the compliance story is proven
- Marketing before approval: transactional texts work immediately; marketing texts sent before carrier approval just vanish. Let the status say approved first
The short version
Steps 1, 2 and 5 are the carrier lane: the phone line, the assignment, and the A2P brand and campaign registration. Steps 3, 4, 6, 7 and 8 are yours: about ten minutes of clicking, spread over the 1 to 3 days the carriers take to approve. After that, abandoned checkouts recover themselves and your campaigns reach the channel with the highest read rates in retail. See what SMS costs on each plan.
