The First 90 Days of Marketing a New Store: What to Run and When
New stores waste their first quarter on the wrong channels. The 90-day plan: capture and email first, recovery flows by week 4, SEO from day one.
A new store’s first quarter is where most of the marketing money gets wasted, because new owners do everything at once or nothing in order. The right sequence is boring and it works: capture from day one, email within the first month, recovery flows by week four, SEO compounding quietly underneath the whole time. Here is the 90-day plan, in order.
Days 1-14: capture everything
Before any campaign exists, the store should be collecting its future audience:
- Email capture live on every entry point: checkout, popups, footer. Every visitor who leaves without buying should leave an address or nothing.
- Back-in-stock capture on every sold-out product. A sold-out page with an email field is the highest-converting page a new store has.
- Announcement and urgency tools on the first promo: a bar with a live countdown, exit-intent capture for leavers.
- Reviews switched on, because the first hundred visitors decide from proof the store does not have yet, and requests on autopilot start fixing that from the first real orders.
None of this requires a budget. The free WooCommerce modules cover the whole list, installed in about 5 minutes; we wrote the free stack guide for exactly this stage.
Weeks 3-6: first campaigns to a real list
Around week three, most stores have something to send to. The first campaigns, in order:
- Welcome flow to new subscribers: what the store is, the category basics, proof, one honest offer
- Abandoned checkout recovery, the highest-converting message in the store, running inside the intent window
- The first broadcast: launch, restock, or promo, with two subject lines tested and the winner to the remainder
The honest expectation, consistent with what we see across programs: email to a real list usually produces revenue in the first month. It is the only channel that pays that fast, which is why it goes before everything except capture.
Weeks 4-8: the always-on layer
Campaigns are the visible half; the always-on flows are the half that pays between them:
- Abandoned cart and checkout recovery tuned and stopping the moment an order lands
- Back-in-stock alerts firing the second inventory returns
- Replenishment reminders where the catalog has consumables
- Live chat on cart and checkout, humans answering, even if only on those pages at first
By week eight the store should earn while nobody is pressing buttons. If it does not, the flows are the first thing to fix, before any new channel gets added.
Weeks 1-12: SEO runs underneath the whole time
SEO starts on day one not because it pays early but because it pays eventually, and month twelve you will wish the clock had started on day one:
- Weeks 1-2: product page template fixed, top-seller titles rewritten around real searches
- Weeks 3-8: collection pages rebuilt as ranking pages, internal links wired, schema live
- Weeks 8-12: first education content, first links earned, first long-tail queries landing
The realistic expectation: small but real traffic from the long tail by months two to three, the compounding visible by months four to six. The full shape is in our honest SEO timeline.
What NOT to do in the first 90 days
- Do not buy ads in restricted categories. Smoke, CBD, hemp: the accounts get flagged, the money evaporates. Owned channels are the whole plan; we covered why in the cannabis restrictions guide.
- Do not run five channels badly. Email plus capture plus SEO beats email, SMS, social, chat and links all at 20%.
- Do not discount as a strategy. The list you just built should not learn that waiting brings coupons.
- Do not skip the report. Even month one: what shipped, what it earned. The habit is the asset.
Fairness check
If the store is not live yet, this plan starts after launch, not before; we build and launch stores on a 30-day path where marketing runs from day one, and that is a different conversation (the launch path covers it for smoke shops). And if the first 90 days show orders but no list growth, the capture layer is broken: fix that before any campaign spend.
How Trinacle runs this for you
This sequence is exactly what the first months of a plan look like:
- Free modules for the capture layer, then managed campaigns when the list is real. See Trinacle email and the free stack.
- SEO scored 0-100 and shipped monthly underneath everything. See Trinacle SEO.
- Recovery flows always-on, live chat answered by humans, revenue attribution from the first send. See how it works.
Plans start at $315/mo, flat, no contracts.
Ninety days from now the store will either have a machine or a memory. Pick a plan and build the machine.
