7 Ecommerce SEO Mistakes That Keep Your Store Invisible

Most stores lose search traffic to the same seven mistakes: thin product pages, empty collections, no schema, unclaimed fitment. The fixes are mechanical.

Most stores do not lose at SEO because the competition is brilliant. They lose to a handful of self-inflicted mistakes, the same ones, store after store: pages that say nothing, collections with no words, schema nobody set up, and a catalog where the best revenue pages are the least optimized. The fixes are mechanical, which is the good news. Here are the seven, with the fix for each.

Mistake 1: Manufacturer boilerplate on product pages

The default product description is written for a catalog, not for a customer or a search engine. Every store carrying the same product ships the same words, so nobody ranks. The fix: rewrite around what buyers actually search, with real specs in text (size, material, compatibility), original photos with alt text, and the questions buyers ask answered on the page. Start with the top sellers; a store earns most of its search revenue from its best few hundred SKUs. The full template is in our product page SEO checklist.

Mistake 2: Collection pages with no text

A grid of product cards is invisible to the queries that matter. Collection pages are where category searches (“dab rigs”, “bridge loans”, “bralettes”) get decided, and they need words: what the category covers, how to choose, the common questions answered. Two hundred well-chosen words plus internal links to every product turns a grid into a ranking page. The hub-and-spoke structure is what lets a big catalog rank at all.

Mistake 3: No schema markup

Product schema is what makes price, availability and star ratings appear in search results. Without it, your listing is a blue link in a page of rich results; with it, you get real estate. Review schema multiplies it. This is a one-time template fix that upgrades every page on the store, which makes it the highest-value hour in ecommerce SEO.

Mistake 4: Publishing without a score

Feelings do not scale across a catalog. Pages ship “when they look done”, which means they ship thin. The fix is a checklist score on the things that move rankings: title with the real query, meta, alt text, spec depth, internal links, schema. Ours is 0-100 on every page before it publishes, and nothing weak ships. Whether you use a tool or a spreadsheet, the score has to exist, because during a busy month “looks done” quietly becomes “half done”.

Products that link only to the cart, collections that link to nothing, blog posts with no path to money pages: crawlers and buyers both need the structure. The fix: every product links to its collection, every collection links to its products, every education post links into a hub. It is plumbing, it is boring, and it is half of what makes a catalog rank.

Mistake 6: No publication tracking

SEO without a tracker decays into vibes. “We did some SEO in the spring” is not a program. The fix: a monthly record of what shipped, where, and when, plus what it earned. It keeps the team honest, it shows you the compounding, and it turns SEO from a leap of faith into a budget line. Ours is a publication tracker the client can audit any time.

Mistake 7: Expecting speed, then quitting

SEO compounds over months. Stores that quit at month two never see month six, and the catalog they abandonded was one quarter from paying. The fix is a cadence, not a burst: pages shipped monthly, links earned steadily, reviews collected on autopilot. Compounding only works on inputs that continue.

Fairness check

SEO is not always the answer. If your store competes on marketplaces where search does not apply, or your catalog is ten products with no search demand, paid channels or email will pay faster. And if the site platform locks templates and schema, fix that before buying any marketing; SEO money spent on a broken foundation evaporates.

How Trinacle runs this for you

Everything above is machinery in our engine, not advice:

  • Product and collection rewrites around real searches, scored 0-100 before they publish, with schema and internal links in the template. See Trinacle SEO.
  • AI produces the volume, humans check the claims, because a wrong spec loses more than a ranking. See the experts.
  • Reviews and links alongside, because stars in results and authority behind pages are the same engine. See Trinacle reviews and Trinacle links.
  • A monthly report in dollars, with the publication tracker you can audit. See how it works.
